Lumin Illuminator

LW Scientific

  • The Lumin™ light source fits our line of Lumin objectives.  It enables dark field, polarization, epi-fluorescence, and other illumination alternatives.  Immediately and accurately identify Tuberculosis and other pathogens with increased sensitivity and specificity.

    (Lumin Universal Objective Sold Separately)
  • This illumination kit includes an integrated filter cube with Light Emitting Diode (LED) illuminator, a universal power supply.  The LED employs a (proprietary) 50,000 hour use bulb Safe light - No harmful UV emissions and no dark room requirement.   Power : Illuminator unit : 5~32 volts/0.7 amp., from Universal power supply 110~240 volts, or battery.

  • What the Lumin™ can do:

For the 9 million new cases of TB occurring each year:
The Lumin™ can diagnose more smear positive disease, more quickly, with patients gaining treatment earlier; the Lumin™ can make proof of successful treatment easier.

For communities living with HIV/AIDS:
TB kills 30-40% of people infected with HIV; risk of spreading TB is one of the greatest causes of stigma.  Existing studies indicate that fluorescence microscopy (as done by the Lumin™) may offer earlier, more sensitive detection of TB in people with HIV, thus improving their chances of survival and protecting those around them.

For health workers, doctors and laboratory staff:
The Lumin™ enables more rapid, easier sputum smear reading with better results than the microscopy of the past 100 years.
Better results with the Lumin™ will build trust and confidence in lab results, encourage repeated microscopy exams when needed, and enable more “active” case finding.
The sharply increased lab worker capacity which the Lumin™ provides will boost morale as more cases are found and the community recognizes that TB can be diagnosed and cured.
Use of the Lumin™ at the periphery and middle levels of health systems will mean that reference laboratories can focus on overall quality control, on advanced culture and other diagnostic platforms, and know that more infectious TB cases are found earlier and closer to the patient.

For management of National TB Programs, of private hospitals and clinics, and for Ministries of Health and of Finance, and for international aid donors and charities, the Lumin™:
Offers a low cost strategy which does not necessitate first replacing existing equipment or upgrading of electrical systems or specialized rooms.
Optimizes the investments of the past decade in advocacy, social-mobilization, and communication aimed at wide social awareness of the symptoms of TB and the need to seek early testing and diagnosis.
Fits directly into the system of laboratory training, quality control and laboratory registry standardization, monitoring and evaluation which has been built into national and global reporting systems to track progress against the TB epidemic.

For those who live and work near persons with undiagnosed TB:
The Lumin™ can help find new and undiagnosed TB cases, allowing treatment to be started and stopping the spread of the TB germ to those nearby.

For those with TB in the Family:
The Lumin™ can help mothers and fathers with TB to be detected earlier and thus lessen the risk to their children: children and teenagers will have a better chance of being detected and started on treatment with use of the Lumin™.

For the elderly:
The elderly are at the greatest risk from latent TB infections acquired decades earlier.  Use of Lumin™ offers better probability of early detection of TB, thus improving their chance of being cured and protecting families or other elderly persons living near them.
